Our Managing Partner, Christopher Beckman, has been deeply involved in the Digital Health industry since the early stages of the Quantified Self movement.  Christopher helped develop core Digital Health patents and other Intellectual Property, and served as Innovation Officer for the JLabs incubated start-up Mymee, until its successful A-Round investment in 2020.  Prior to founding Beckman Law, Christopher was a patent litigator with Fitzpatrick | Venable, where he handled high-stakes life sciences patent litigation, and was part of the litigation team that successfully defended the patent for Daiichi Sankyo’s blockbuster drug BENICAR at trial and on appeal, protecting $1 billion in annual revenue.

Trade Secrets

Often overlooked as an intellectual property asset, trade secrets can be a powerful tool for protecting your private business information that gives you a commercial advantage.  Sometimes, this private, advantageous information is referred to as your “secret sauce,” or “secret formula.”  Think of Coca-Cola’s well-guarded secret formula, and you can see why trade secrets can be so valuable.  Unlike patents and other forms of intellectual property, trade secrets do not involve making an application filing before a government office.  Rather, they are created by careful written policies and practices that maintain secrecy of the information.  In the main, trade Secrets are complementary to patent protection, not a replacement for it.  Many technologies cannot be kept secret, either due to reverse engineering or inevitable publication.  But where they can apply, Trade Secrets are power intellectual property assets.  At Beckman Law, we have helped several clients take the necessary steps to craft effective trade secret policies, and document them to support successful investment rounds.
